What Comes After Your First Surf Lesson? Taking the Next Step in Your Surfing Journey

Summer on the Crystal Coast brings thousands of people to the beach, and for many of them, summer is when they discover surfing for the very first time.

Maybe you took a lesson with us in June, July, or August. Maybe you stood up for the first time. Maybe you caught a wave all the way to the beach. Maybe you spent more time falling than riding—but you couldn’t stop smiling.

Then summer started winding down.

The vacation ended. School started. Everyone went home.

But your surfing journey doesn’t have to end there.

Your First Lesson Is Just the Beginning

A surf lesson is designed to give you the foundation you need to safely get into the water and experience the excitement of catching a wave.

But what happens after that first lesson?

That’s where the real learning begins.

Once you’ve experienced the excitement of surfing, you start realizing there’s a lot more to learn.

Where should I sit?

Which waves should I paddle for?

When should I start paddling?

Why did I catch that wave but miss the next three?

How do I turn?

How do I get farther down the line?

How do I know when the conditions are right for me?

Those are the questions that turn someone who has taken a surf lesson into someone who is learning to surf.

And that’s exactly why we created our Sunday Morning Progression Sessions.

This Isn’t Another Beginner Lesson

Our Sunday Morning Progression Session isn’t simply another opportunity to stand on a surfboard.

It’s a coaching session designed for surfers who have already taken a lesson with RWS and are ready to build on what they’ve learned.

Instead of starting over with the basics every time, we pick up where you left off.

We look at where you are in your surfing journey, identify the next skill you need to develop, and spend the session working toward that goal.

For one surfer, that might mean becoming more consistent with their pop-up.

For another, it might mean improving paddle technique or learning how to position themselves for better waves.

For someone further along, it could mean working on trimming, turning, wave selection, or beginning to understand how to generate speed.

Progress looks different for every surfer.

Our job is to help you find yours.

From Catching Waves to Understanding Waves

There’s a big difference between catching a wave and understanding how to catch waves.

In your first lesson, an instructor may help you find the right wave and get you into position.

As you progress, we want you to begin making those decisions yourself.

That’s an important part of becoming an independent surfer.

During our progression sessions, we’ll talk about the conditions we’re seeing that morning and how they affect your surfing. We’ll discuss positioning, wave selection, timing, and what you can do differently to improve your next ride.

The goal isn’t for you to depend on an instructor forever.

The goal is to give you the knowledge and skills to eventually need us less.

That’s what progression is all about.

Built by Educators. Taught by Professionals.

At RWS Surf School, we believe learning to surf should be intentional.

Our lessons are built by educators and taught by professionals. That philosophy doesn’t stop when the first lesson ends.

Progression requires more than simply spending more time in the water. It requires purposeful practice, feedback, repetition, and understanding what you’re trying to accomplish.

That’s why we don’t simply put you in the water and tell you to go surf.

We coach.

We observe.

We communicate.

We adjust.

And most importantly, we help you understand why you’re working on a particular skill.

Because when you understand the “why,” you can take that knowledge with you long after the session ends.

Why Sunday Morning?

There’s something special about a Sunday morning on the Crystal Coast.

The beach is quieter. The crowds have thinned out. The pace is different.

For many of our local surfers, it’s an opportunity to slow down, get in the water, and focus on improving.

And after a busy summer of introducing visitors to surfing, Sunday mornings give us a chance to continue working with the surfers we’ve already met.

The kids who took lessons this summer can come back.

The families who discovered surfing on vacation can continue their journey.

And the first-time surfers who caught that one wave they couldn’t stop talking about can come back and work toward catching the next one.

You Don’t Have to Be an Expert

Progression doesn’t mean you’re expected to be an advanced surfer.

Quite the opposite.

You don’t need to be carving down the line or surfing overhead waves.

You simply need to be ready to learn.

Maybe your next step is catching waves consistently.

Maybe it’s paddling into waves on your own.

Maybe it’s learning to ride farther down the line.

Maybe it’s figuring out how to turn.

Maybe it’s simply becoming more comfortable reading the ocean.

Wherever you are, there’s a next step.

Our job is to help you find it.

From Summer Lesson to Lifelong Surfer

One of our favorite things about teaching surfing is watching what happens after that first lesson.

The nervous beginner becomes more confident.

The first wave becomes ten.

Ten waves become better waves.

The surfer who once needed someone to tell them when to paddle starts reading the ocean for themselves.

And eventually, something changes.

They’re no longer just taking surf lessons.

They’re surfing.

That’s the journey we want to help create at RWS Surf School.

Your first lesson isn’t the finish line.

It’s the starting point.
